9/25/2023 0 Comments Pre amp micI have used solid 'tag' tantalum caps in this circuit, but they are (or were) revoltingly unreliable and I stopped using them after it was necessary to change every tantalum cap in a batch of about 20 small 8 channel stage mixers. Use of Low Leakage electros may be worth the effort, but I have not experimented with this option. The requirement for electrolytic capacitors does not compromise anything, and for the impedances involved relatively large value caps are a must. Needless to say, the use of metal film resistors is a must to get the best possible noise performance. Even then, lower noise was certainly possible, but the circuit complexity and cost increased very quickly. These days it's easy to get lower noise, but when these were made in quantity (in the 1970s) it wasn't a bad effort for such a simple circuit. This is completely unattainable in practice, because of the noise from the microphone itself as well as other extraneous noises which cannot be eliminated. This translates to an equivalent input noise of about 3.2nV√Hz, or 446nV for a 20kHz bandwidth. Measurements taken when I was building lots of these show that the equivalent input noise was about -127dBm, so with a gain of 40dB, signal to noise ratio should be about 86dB relative to an output of 0dBu (775mV RMS). (Note that the value of R5 has been revised from its previous value of 560 ohms.) The alternate values (4.7k and 180 ohms) can be used if you need to drive a lower than normal impedance. The value of 390 ohms is optimum when driving higher impedances. A value of 330 ohms biases the emitter of Q2 to about 19V, and this allows an output swing of ☑0V into a 22k ohm load. If the circuit is driving a following stage with an input impedance of around 22k, it is beneficial to reduce the value of R5 if the maximum possible output swing is needed. That means that Q1 is operated from close to a perfectly constant current, which raises the gain and makes the transistor much more linear. All this from a single amplifying transistor ! This is obtained due to the bootstrap circuit (R2, R3 and C2), which forces the voltage at both ends of R2 to be (almost) the same. The open-loop gain of this little circuit is about 3,400 - this is obtained by disconnecting the feedback resistor, and bypassing R5 with a suitably large value capacitor. For this reason, making the preamp with variable gain is almost an essential requirement. The output level from a well known brand of vocal mic has been measured at over 1 Volt peak-to-peak with loud singers, so the 'conventional wisdom' of mics having low output is clearly wrong. Note that this is far too high to use with any microphone used for close-miked vocals or instrument amplifiers, but is suitable for normal speech.īy making the 'Set Gain' resistor a 50k linear pot, the gain can be varied from virtually 0 up to a maximum of 40 (32dB), with low noise and distortion at all settings. With the component values shown, impedance matching is correct for a 600 Ohm mic, and the gain is about 40. It requires a well regulated (or extremely well smoothed) supply voltage of 30V, and will typically be able to supply a maximum output level of around 7V RMS allowing for typical component spreads. I have used this circuit in Front-of-House, foldback (monitor) and studio mixers, and managed to obtain extremely good results - I still have a little 6 channel mixer (which I use only occasionally now) using this circuit, and have never been even slightly tempted to replace it with even the best of opamps (or Figure 3 for that matter). If you happen to have a suitable one in your junk box, give it a try with this circuit - I doubt that you will be disappointed with the result. It is most regrettable that good mic transformers are rather hard to come by, and are expensive. The shield of the balanced cable must be earthed of course, but in my experience with live music and studio work, less noise is picked up if the internal wiring is floating. In most cases, a good mic transformer will actually outperform active balancing circuits, because there is (or should be) no ground reference. One limitation is that it is not balanced, which is not a problem in a home recording environment, but may allow the mic lead (and case) to pick up noise with long cable runs or in a hostile environment.Īs shown, it is not really suitable for professional work (although it has been used in a stage mixer with excellent results), but the addition of a 1:1 microphone transformer on the input will convert it into a balanced preamp with very high performance. This is a design for a low noise microphone preamplifier, which is ideally suited to low impedance (600 Ohm nominal) microphones.

9/25/2023 0 Comments New years resolutioners statsOf the people who planned to set a resolution, 42% wanted to lose weight and 38% hoped to better their mental well-being.į or people living in Great Britain, the most popular New Year’s resolutions were improving fitness (47%), losing weight (44%), and improving diet (41%).īut as hopeful as we are at the start of a new year, statistics show that most people are not successful in achieving their goals. The most popular goals were to improve finances, eat better, and move more. For many, a week has also passed since setting a new year’s resolution or two.Īccording to an Ipsos survey, 38% of Americans planned to make a resolution in 2022. "It's a tradition, but people find it annoying because they're being pressurized in order to come up with something," he said, although he did add that the prospect of a "clean slate" in the New Year can help people stay motivated. It’s been a week since we rang in the new year, marking not just a new page on the calendar but a new decade. Similarly, life coach Oliver Jones told CNBC that setting a resolution doesn't usually work if someone is feeling pressured to do so, as is often the case in the New Year. However, he argued that for many this is simply not sustainable, and it's actually better to aim for slower progress. Hatter pointed out that there can be a tendency to try to rush for results with our goals, as has been seen in dieting and gym culture. we're going to make slower progress than we'd like and I think that's an inevitable part of life, it's not just with the coronavirus," he said. In this sense, he said, it was also important to have self-compassion - acknowledge when some goals feel less achievable because of various life challenges, such as Covid public health restrictions. Nick Hatter, a life coach and author, told CNBC on a telephone call that it's important when setting life goals to make adjustments for setbacks along the way, particularly in light of uncertainty amid the pandemic. workers are planning to move jobs within the next three to six months, according to a survey of more than 6,000 people taken by recruitment firm Randstad, published in November. This figure fell slightly in October, to 4.16 million, but the number of job openings grew to over 11 million, meaning many people still aren't returning to the workforce.Īnd more are still planning to make the change. quit their jobs in September, according to data from the Labor Department. The "Great Resignation," which has seen swathes people quit or change jobs during the pandemic, is a clear reflection of the widespread feeling of restlessness over the past year.Ī record high of 4.4 million people in the U.S. For instance, she suggested, if you decide to get a new job, think about roughly how many interviews, job applications and hours you might spend looking at different roles, as doing so can help the brain break down that goal. If you decide to go ahead, McDermid recommended picking one goal at a time and then breaking it down into measurable steps. McDermid recommends that before deciding whether to set resolution, you should reflect on the past year, looking at what went right and what went wrong. She also said that people tend to set too many goals, are not specific enough with their plans, and don't factor in failure, meaning they give up when they break their resolutions. Many tend to take a "hopeful" approach to achieving resolutions, she said, without actually having a plan and understanding the reason they set that goal in the first place. McDermid said she isn't a big believer in setting New Year's resolutions, mainly because of the way people approach them. So how do you avoid succumbing to that pressure, and feeling overwhelmed in the New Year? Measurable steps " much more likely to end up disappointed because you're trying to grab everything, without any clear plan," she added. In other words, she said, you "risk trying to do too much and not getting any of it." Sandra McDermid, a life coach who runs her own practice, told CNBC via video call that there's a risk that in trying to accelerate change in our lives, we end up adopting a "frantic" or "grabby" energy. This might tempt some to make drastic changes in the New Year, in an effort to make up for lost time. That's according to a study of over 14,600 workers across 13 countries, by software firm Oracle and HR research firm Workplace Intelligence, which was published in October.Īnd while there continues to be a great deal of uncertainty, with information on the newest Covid omicron variant still emerging, there are some hopes that 2022 could look a little brighter. I think I’ve improved a lot on it since coming back from injury. “I think defensive abilities are going to be at the core,” Yurtseven said of his offseason work. “While I haven’t given it much thought in terms of balancing those three,” Yurtseven said, “I think my priority is to play, because that’s the way to get better and reach the potential of the team and improve personally so you can help the team win.”Īmong the reasons Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has turned elsewhere have been defensive questions, with Yurtseven limited in his lateral movement with his 6-foot-11, 255-pound frame. Now there is a decision based on playing time, role and salary. The previous time he was a free agent, he quickly was signed by the Heat amid a dominant 2021 summer. So to be able to go through that and grow from that was a learning curve.” “It taught me a lot about the process of recovery,” Yurtseven said of what he endured this past season. There then were eight mop-up appearances during the playoffs. And of course, after his hot start of the season with the Detroit Pistons, Bojan Bogdanovic has been linked to the Heat and continues to be a player teams have eyes on as he becomes trade-eligible ahead of the trade deadline. For Yurtseven, 2022-23 essentially was a lost season, appearing in only nine regular-season games due to ankle surgery. KJ Martin is known to be interested in relocating from Houston as his role continues to change with the Rockets. The prospect of a reunion with former Heat forward Jae Crowder remains a possibility as he is known to be seeking a way out of Phoenix. However, with the cap situation, the Heat are a bit strapped when it comes to adding in free agency, but they have been linked to available big men in the trade market. If Miami were to look to free agency at big man, they could have some options in available bigs like Derrick Favors, LaMarcus Aldridge was mentioned as a potential signing earlier this offseason, and DeMarcus Cousins remains a free agent and had a solid showing last season with the Denver Nuggets. Could the Heat look to add big-man depth? Big man has already been a position the Heat needed improvement and now with the recent injury update on Yurtseven, it has only gotten weaker. Without Yurtseven, the Heat lacks depth at the center position and only has two options with Bam Adebayo and DeWayne Dedmon. “According to a source familiar with the injury, Yurtseven continues to seek further opinion for what appears to be a bone-spur issue.” Even without surgery, the absence would be extensive. “Out since the first exhibition with what the Heat have been listing as an ankle impingement, Yurtseven is facing the possibility of surgery that would not have him back until well after the turn of the calendar. “The Miami Heat are facing the likelihood of being without Omer Yurtseven for an extended period, with a possibility of the second-year center being out for the season, the Sun Sentinel has learned,” the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman wrote. He has been battling an ankle injury all season and now could be forced to get surgery to repair it, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel. Yurtseven has yet to get on the court for his sophomore year with the Heat. Omer Yurtseven Battling Injury This Season His defense needs a lot of work and may always be held back by his athletic limitations, but he gives Miami’s great developmental staff plenty to work with,” Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote of Yurtseven. “His offensive skills are sharp, and he could further sharpen them by harnessing an intriguing-but-not-there-yet jumper. However, his ceiling looked like it could be much higher when he got more consistent minutes last January while the Heat battled injury and in that time averaged 10.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while averaging over 22 minutes per game. The 6-foot-11 big man out of Georgetown showed flashes in his rookie year with the Heat and averaged 5.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Just before the start of the 2022-23 NBA season, the Miami Heat’s Omer Yurtseven was named one of the leagues best-kept secrets in an article from Bleacher Report. Even when it does need to be recharged, it only takes around 20 minutes. It can easily handle mowing the lawn three times without requiring a recharge. We are extremely satisfied with the performance of the lawn mower, particularly with how long the battery lasts. This mower comes with a 56-volt battery and a fast charger that has the battery ready to go in just an hour. We really appreciated this feature, as the mower doesn’t take up as much room in the garage. Once you finish mowing, the handle folds all the way down for easy storage. Most of the mower's construction is heavy-duty plastic for weather and rust resistance, but that might not be as durable as steel, although we felt it seemed quite sturdy. This mower even has a LED headlight, so you can mow early in the morning or at dusk to take advantage of mild temperatures. You can dispose of the grass clippings in the included 2-bushel bag, discharge them to the side, or mulch them into fine clippings to quickly decompose them into healthful lawn nutrients. At nine inches in diameter, the mower’s wheels are fairly large, and it is rear-wheel drive, which also helps when mowing over rough terrain or hilly areas. As the self-propelled function does most of the heavy work, this is also a great mower for yards with slopes. We found that the mower was easy to maneuver, even around obstacles or sharp turns. We also liked the adjustable handle, which made it more comfortable to mow. However, we soon got the hang of it and appreciated the ease of adjusting the mower’s speed. At first, it felt like the mower was pulling us along. As this was our first time using a self-propelled mower, there was a bit of a learning curve. The speed of the mower is variable, so you can set it to match your stride from a leisurely 0.9 mph up to a brisk 3.1 mph. Aside from that, it delivers a precise and crisp cut that is sure to impress. However, we found that it struggled a bit in the wet grass as well, becoming stuck at one point in a ferny patch. A few buyers have complained that it struggles to lift overly tall grass high enough for an even cut. The lawn mower easily handles all common types of lawn grass, including tougher warm-season varieties like Bermudagrass, zoysia, and St. This mower has a 21-inch cutting deck and a one-hand lever that adjusts the cutting heights through six different settings for grass heights of 1.5 to 4 inches. And a mere press of the button brought it roaring to life. Other than attaching the bag, assembling the mower was easy. We put the mower to the test in early spring, mowing a lawn just out of winter dormancy that was patchy, wet, and ferny. Instead, this self-propelled mower from EGO has a 56-volt, 7.5-Ah battery that provides up to 60 minutes of runtime on a single charge that's enough to mow most lawns up to a 0.5 acre and more than enough for our small yard. Some struggles with mowing wet or tall grassĮarning the top spot in our tests is a battery lawn mower that rivals the power of a gas mower but without the smelly fumes, the oil changes, or the frustrating pull cord. We bought and tested several self-propelled mowers, both gas and electric, and evaluated many others based on their power, the size of lawn they can handle, their options for handling grass clippings, their range of cutting heights, the easiness of using the mower, and their overall value. And I love that I can easily switch between mulching, side discharge, and bagging capabilities." Plus, I can adjust the speed so I can mow quickly or at a slower, more leisurely pace. Henry Bravo, founder and editor-in-chief of, adds, "Self-propelled lawnmowers are much easier to maneuver around obstacles, and they can handle uneven terrain without a problem. Overall, a self-propelled lawn mower can make mowing easier and more efficient." Self-propelled mowers can also provide a more consistent cut, since the speed is controlled by the mower rather than the operator. This can be beneficial for people with large lawns or those who have difficulty pushing a mower due to physical limitations. These mowers not only power the blades but also power the wheels to make your pushing requirements little more than guiding the machine across the grass.īrock Ingham, gardener, landscaper, and founder of the website Bigger Garden, says, "The main advantage of a self-propelled mower is that it requires less effort to operate than a push mower. If you dream of a lush, green lawn, but dread the maintenance involved in keeping it that way, then a self-propelled lawn mower can make your life easier.
